How to Achieve a Goal
Recently I watched an amazing documentary called The Horse Boy about this family who went to the ends of the earth to find healing for their autistic son. It was deeply moving and incredibly insightful into not only families dealing with illness, but families dealing with challenges and goals. I drew many parallels between lessons I learned from this movie and the business world. Before I share, check out the trailer:
Between the temper tantrums that lasted for hours and Rowan’s inability to poop on his own (and therefore the parents having to clean his bum constantly), it seemed absolutely insane to even consider taking this child to Mongolia and going deep into the mountains on horseback for days on end. That would be challenging for a ‘normal’ child, let alone one that has these challenges. But they did it, desperate to find one of the greatest shamans on earth so that their son may find some healing.
While he was not cured of his autism, he can now go to the bathroom on his own, he no longer has temper tantrums, and he is able to socialize with other children. Pretty darn amazing!
We see in this movie that 3 keys to achieving your goals are:
- Willingness to venture way beyond your comfort zone: You have to be willing to go against the grain, take risks, and be okay when not everyone understands what you are doing and why.
- A mindset that is 100% focused on the end goal: Be crystal clear about what you want to achieve, and make sure that every action you take moves you closer to that goal. You must be passionate about the goal and completely committed to it.
- The ability to be self-reflective and grow: As you take action, it is essential to reflect on yourself. Be willing to take an honest look at where you are stuck and where you are rockin’ it. Look at every action step you take and ask yourself, “What worked? What didn’t? How can I improve?”
Take some time today and ask yourself, “What is my end goal? Am I truly passionate about it and 100% committed to achieving it? What can I do to step outside of my comfort zone and achieve it? And where do I need to grow on a personal level to let go of my self-sabotage?”
