As humans, we want to soften what we see as demands in our daily interactions. Everyone wants to be liked, well thought of and the go-to person, but it’s not always possible to get what you need when you’re working so hard to be so soft.
In business, decisions have to be made. You can’t soften a business decision to take over your competitor – then you’d lose business and wind up without a company! There’s a fine line between being in your power and being too strong and it’s that line I want you to walk.
Being in your power is a simple way of finding the strength and confidence to stand behind the decisions and choices you make. If you have a reason to ask someone for an item or cash investment, making that entreaty from a place of power will ensure that you actually ask and not talk yourself out of an opportunity.
How to ask from a place of power:
How you ask will make the difference in how much money and respect you will be able to command. It will have an impact as to whether or not people see you as a leader or a follower.
Yesterday, I spent a couple of hours re-writing a client’s speech. She is the executive director of a charity and needs to ask for big money. The whole thing came across as ‘begging’ both in words and energy.
In all my years of coaching, I can tell you that 80% of the people I meet don’t know how to ask from a place of power and it impacts their results.
When you go to ‘pitch’ or ‘ask’ for something:
- a) Always start with a compelling story that speaks to the listener’s values and emotions. Once they are hooked, they will feel connected to you.
- b) Be sure to use words and phrases that makes the listener the hero and not the savior. You don’t need saving so stop begging in your approach. Instead show them the big picture and how they can be part of something amazing.

A little inspiration of what is possible for you:
I recently had a client who is a VP of a large financial firm who was being picked on and not taken seriously by her superiors. In her words, “I am a Latina in an old boy’s club.” Since working together for a half day, no one at work picks on her and now they listen to what she has to say.
