Storytelling in Business
I want to tell you about Joshua…
Joshua is a hard working entrepreneur.
He networks all the time.
Follows up regularly.
Puts himself out there consistently.
He tells people his credentials.
He talks about the benefits of working with him.
He asks for the sale.
But… very little sales.
And… the sales he does close, come after a ton of work and pushing.
He is burnt out. Fed up. Doesn’t understand why it can’t be easier.
This reality is going to be hard to hear …
People couldn’t care less about you when they first meet you unless you are a celebrity of some kind or outstandingly entertaining. So to list off your credentials isn’t going to fly.
And yes I know everyone is telling you to know your benefits. BUT…
Firstly, most people in your industry are delivering the same benefits as everyone else. You need to radically differentiate yourself to move the sale along much faster. Ask yourself, “What insight can I provide that inspires people to think differently? What am I talking about that no one else in my industry is talking about?” Get this piece up and you have grabbed attention!
Secondly, listing off benefits is as boring as counting toilet paper squares.
To grab attention and be memorable, you need a BUY IN. Let me tell you how…
Storytelling. Along with prostitution, it is the oldest profession in the world.
Now imagine this…
You go to a networking event.
People ask you what you do.
Instead of listing off how fabulous you are, you launch into a cool story.
2 minutes later, the listener is laughing, feeling inspired, fully engaged.
You have hooked them!
They have bought in and they want to know more.
Way more fun. Far more impactful.
Now think about a sales conversation…
Let’s say you are in real estate.
You are asking your prospect questions.
She tells you she has an autistic child in the home and nervous about selling.
Do you launch into your 25 years in the industry and all your awards? Nope.
Instead, you tell her a moving story about another family you sold a house for that had an autistic child in the home. You let her get emotional engaged with you and see the possibilities for her own home.
Stop telling and start engaging. Be memorable. Make an impact. Inspire people to buy from you and follow your lead.
